The Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH) is a provincial, multi-disciplinary, registered charitable organization serving the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals of all ages. We provide innovative client services and programs in several social service areas: Sign Language Interpreting; Employment Counseling; Seniors Outreach; Audiology and Communication Aids.  Established in 1956, WIDHH has received numerous accolades over the years for our excellence in client services and community work.


Our Interpreting Department is current seeking a qualified candidate for the following position:


Full-time (35 hours), 12-week contract (summer position)

June 10, 2019 to August 30, 2019

Job Summary:

The Communication Assistant provides administrative support to both the Interpreting and Communications & Marketing Department. The Communication Assistant will be fluent in American Sign Language and ideally a member of the Deaf community.


Work Performed:       

  • Assists in the preparation of information materials for the Interpreting Department
  • Assists with administrative work (filing, phone calls, video calls, relief coverage for community interpreting) for the Interpreting Department
  • Supports clients on use of video relay services
  • Provides data entry support for MIS and CIS
  • Competency in using current digital social media
  • Assists with public events for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community
  • Assists Communications & Marketing Department in the preparation of marketing materials that are communicatively accessible to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community (video and print materials) 



  • Ideal for post-secondary student with relevant experience and interest
  • Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • In-depth sensitivity and knowledge about Deaf culture, Deaf-Blind needs, and the communication modalities of hard of hearing individuals
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Responsible and positive work attitude
  • Organized with excellent attention to detail
  • Presents professionally and is respectful of confidentiality requirements of position
  • Excellent written communication skills


This position is a part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program with funding assistance provided by Employment and Social Development Canada. Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and
  • Legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. (International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
